John A. Clark (1917-1989)
John A. Clark, former Winthrop Town Clerk,
resident and credit union forefather, was a leader in Winthrop's credit union
movement. He believed passionately about the ideals of cooperative banking and
was steadfast in his commitment of people helping people. In 1963,
from a small office in Winthrop's Town Hall, the credit union was founded with 9
charter members and $2400 in assets at the end of its first year.
Today, under the vision and leadership of his
son, Joseph M. Clark, and a strong 9-member Board of Directors, the credit union
has nearly 44 million in assets, two branches, 5600 members and an expanded
product line rivaling the largest banks and financial institutions. WFCU
maintains a community charter and has a special designation to help those of low
to modest means. The WFCU is testament to those who envisioned its need
and created the foundation for its longevity.
In memory of John A. Clark, the WFCU offers
one $500 scholarship to WFCU members who are graduating high school and have
qualities similar to that of John A. Clark.
Applicants are asked to submit a 2-paged,
